So what is the deal with those necklaces all the babies are wearing these days?
They are baltic amber teething necklaces. And no, they are not meant for tots to gnaw on. The necklace isn’t a teething toy.
Amber contains succinic acid which is an analgesic and purported healing agent. As the amber rubs against the baby’s warm skin, it releases oil rich with succinic acid. Used more commonly in Europe, this homeopathic remedy is non-invasive and, well, stylish.
Does it work? I don’t know. It doesn’t hurt. And the necklaces are sweet. Teething bites and frankly, I’ll try anything. Except orajel. I tried that with Norah and managed to get her in her eye. Bad mama moment.
When looking for a safe amber necklace for your baby, select one that is knotted between each bead. If the necklace should break, the bead won’t be an immediate choking hazard. It is recommended that the necklace be removed when children sleep. If children are chewing on the beads, the necklace should be removed as the amber may chip.

Has Cedar gotten a tooth yet? Ivey hasn’t, but she’s showing all the signs of teething like Suzi did right before she got her first one. Most of all, she’s not sleeping as well as she did before and wants to be held even more. I tried to put her amber necklace on her, but she has a short, chubby neck and it really aggravated her when it got caught in there. I’m going to try again when she’s spending more time sitting up. One time I put Orajel on Suzi and then tried to nurse her and she bit me, so I don’t like that stuff either. Cedar looks so cute in that outfit!
Jenn–you’re right, the butter colored beads are supposed to have more succinic acid. I have a mama necklace that is butter and, well, it looked kind of cheap. Looks like I’m wearing Mardi Gras beads. So I went with dark for the kid.
Jenny–no teeth yet but she’s trying hard. Gnawing on wooden teethers all day. Norah got a tooth at 3 months so I thought I’d better be proactive.

Do you know if the succinic acid is passed on in breastmilk? I have an amber necklace that I wear and one for Erik but the hysterical mother in me worries that his will choke him.
Kathleen, they make baby ankle bracelets if you’re worried about choking. I’ve also seen the kind with a magnetic or safety clasp that will break apart when pulled hard.

I will suggest amber teething necklaces. They’ve been super. It might be too early to tell, but both of the kids have been way less irritable today. I haven’t given them any tylenol for teething pain, but they seem happy and pain free with the necklaces. Both of them are sleeping better, and the rashy redness on their faces has cleared up.
